Healthy Pregnancy – 19 Weeks

Uncategorized Nov 09, 2014

How far along? 19 Weeks

Baby Size: A mango; about 6 inches and 8.5 ounces (The Bump app).

Weight gain: I am at a net gain of 2.5 lbs, all this week! The baby has done a lot of growing this week as I have also gained an inch in my belly over the week!

Maternity clothes? I have pretty much conceded that maternity clothes are the most hassle free. I still have one pair of bigger jeans I can wear, and yoga pants and dresses are still key.

Belly Button in or out? Halfie.

Best moment this week: Feeling movement outside my body. I was resting my hand on my abdomen and the baby knocked it away!

Miss Anything? Running

Movement: I have been feeling movement each day since last week.

Food cravings: Nothing major this week, although I did get to have some homemade beef stew a la Mom. Nature must have known this was the week the baby was going through a growth spurt because I finally had enough energy to cook everyday and really prepare some food for the...

Healthy Pregnancy – 18 Weeks

Uncategorized Nov 02, 2014

How far along? 18 Weeks

Baby Size: A sweet potato; about 5.6 inches, 6.7 ounces (The Bump app).

Weight gain: I am hanging steady at no net gain. My body composition is very different than it was pre-pregnancy, regardless of my weight.

Same Weight, Different Body

Maternity clothes? Depends on the day. Some days my next size up, or stretch pants fit fine, other days I am not sure if sweat pants will stay on. I am not fully submerged in the maternity clothes zone yet, but I am dipping my toe.

Belly Button in or out? Halfie.

Best moment this week: Feeling my first real movement!

Miss Anything? Lifting for strength!

Movement: Beginning Thursday, there have been a few movements!

Food cravings: A grilled cheese sandwich with white American cheese. I have not made one yet, but I see it in my near future.

Gender: Only one more week until we find out!

Looking forward to: Finding out the sex of our baby next week! Any predictions?

Healthy Pregnancy – 17 Weeks

Uncategorized Oct 26, 2014

How far along? 17 Weeks

Baby Size: An onion

Weight gain: I have finally returned to my pre-pregnancy weight. So I am 0 lbs up or down from my original weight.

Maternity clothes? I am rocking anything that is stretchy. Dresses and yoga pants are most comfortable right now. Maternity clothes are still comically large.

Belly Button in or out? Forever sporting a halfie.

Best moment this week: Attending my first wedding where everyone actually knew I was pregnant! It is much easier to have fun when you do not feel the need to spend the wedding defending your choice not to drink and sucking in your stomach!

Wedding fun!

Miss Anything? I miss running! And my pre-pregnancy food palette.

Movement: I have yet to feel any movement, but look forward to it in the next few weeks.

Food cravings: I have not been craving much this week. Perhaps those pancakes last week filled my craving quota for a few weeks.

Gender: Only two more weeks...

Healthy Pregnancy – 16 Weeks

Uncategorized Oct 19, 2014

How far along? 16 Weeks

Baby Size: An Avocado

Weight gain: I am up a little over two pounds from my initial weight loss, but still in the red from my pre-pregnancy weight by almost three pounds. Just another example that the scale is not always the most accurate assessment of your health and fitness!

Maternity clothes? I have moved on to old “fat” clothes and yoga pants. I’m hanging tight in this area for a little while.

Belly Button in or out? Still a halfie.

Best moment this week: I had another doctor’s appointment, and I loved hearing the heartbeat!

Miss Anything? I still miss running, but I am grateful that some of my workout restrictions have been removed.

Movement: So far nothing more than what the ultrasound showed. We are approaching the time when I will be able to feel it.

Food cravings: I was out to lunch this week and after I had ordered a wrap and soup, the person behind me received the pancakes she...

Healthy Pregnancy – 15 Weeks

How far along? 15 Weeks

Baby Size: An Orange

Weight gain: Not sure this week.

Maternity clothes? I am loving yoga pants, but when I have to wear clothes that button they still fit. By night time even my stretch jeans are a bit uncomfortable so I think I will be in maternity pants within the next week or two.

Belly Button in or out? Partially out, with a little more POP by night. I am sure the belly button will be fully out soon since mine is so big anyway.

Best moment this week: Seeing the nighttime bump! It makes pregnancy feel more real (because the symptoms just are not real enough)!

Miss Anything? I am still missing my full gym routine, but am staying active. I also miss sleeping without being surrounded by 50 pillows.

Movement: I felt a little fluttering this week, but hey maybe it was just gas? It’s a little early, but I would like to believe it is movement.

Food cravings: I am still loving mac and cheese, so I have tried to...

Healthy Pregnancy – 14 Weeks

How far along? 14 Weeks

Baby Size: A Lemon

Weight gain: I am still down about three pounds since I got pregnant, but up two from the weight I had lost.

Maternity clothes? Still wearing my stretch jeans and regular shorts.

Belly Button in or out? Partially out, with a little more POP by night.

Best moment this week: Having another ultrasound and seeing the baby constantly moving, flailing, and moving exactly opposite of where the tech needed.

Miss Anything? Running and lifting. The doctor has put me on slight precautions until further notice due to placenta previa. It is no big deal and in many cases fixes itself, but it is better to be safe than sorry. In the meantime, I have been going on long walks and doing some light body weight exercises with long breaks. No matter the obstacles, there are always ways to overcome them.

Movement: It is still too early to feel anything, but that baby is a mover and a shaker according to the...

Healthy Pregnancy – 13 Weeks

Uncategorized Sep 28, 2014

I am excited to announce that we are expecting a new member in our family. Over the next several months I invite you to join the journey of the baby bump growth. I will be posting workouts that I am doing, and recipes that I am loving, to maintain a healthy pregnancy!

Being pregnant is not a time to let yourself go. It is the most important time to take care of your body and yourself. I do not want to wallow in the discomforts that come along with pregnancy. Instead, I choose to embrace the wonder of pregnancy and all of the discomforts and joys that come with it!

Tired at 13 Weeks

How far along? 13 Weeks, 2 Days

Baby Size: A peach

Weight gain: I have lost five pounds to date. This is all due to loss of muscle during the first trimester when I was too uncomfortable to lift. Another sign that weight is not always the best indicator of your fitness!

Maternity clothes? Not yet. I’m still fitting into my normal clothes, even when I am not wearing yoga...

How Do I Shrink My Thighs?

Uncategorized Sep 23, 2014

“How do I shrink my thighs?” Many women have asked me this question. The most concise answer I can give to this is: nutrition. I know it is the last thing anyone wants to hear, but nutrition is the key to all of your fitness and body goals.

Spot reducing is very difficult, and most people argue, not possible; however, strength training can be muscle specific. With strength training you can build sturdy muscles, which typically helps burn fat. Muscle burns more fat at rest than fat does, therefore, as you build muscle you are revving up your metabolism.

Great strength training moves include squats, deadlifts, lunges, and bridges. As your form gets better and your strength grows, add more weight. Next, add some spurts jumping or sprints in there to burn fat while strengthening your legs. Burpees or box jumps are a great addition to a good leg workout.

Cardio can be helpful, but it is important to do the right kind of cardio. Spending hours on the elliptical may make...

Maintaining Health While Moving Across the Country

Uncategorized Sep 14, 2014

For the last three weeks, my husband and I have been making our way across the country and unpacking as we moved from coastal North Carolina to coastal California. Before we moved, we made a few staples for our trip (bagels, boiled eggs) and bought some snacks to hold us over on the longer rides (Quest bars, bananas, oranges). As the time approached for the packers to arrive and for us to close up the apartment, our fridge was barren. Once we arrived we did not have a refrigerator for a couple of days.

We spent a lot of our time eating out, but that did not mean chicken fingers and fries for us. When I eat out I try to make sure that I get something with at least a protein and vegetables or fruit (depending on what is available). Getting through long car rides with greasy food sitting on my stomach is not appealing to me. In the evenings, we stayed with a lot of family and friends on the trip, where we often made or were offered homemade meals. This certainly helped cut down on...

Why Frozen Yogurt Is A Crock

Uncategorized Jul 22, 2014

I am over the frozen yogurt fad. If you want to treat yourself with a dessert once in a while, by all means do so: balance is the key to a healthy lifestyle. If you want a healthy dessert, there are options but frozen yogurt is not one of them and I am sick of it being paraded around as one.

Everyone seems to be in a frenzy about low-calorie, fat-free, low-carb eating. If people would focus more on the quality of the food they are putting in their body, counting calories would become obsolete. By eating high nutrient food, such as vegetables, fruits, meats, and other food that is not processed, you are giving your body the nutrients it needs. If there is not a way to make it at home, it probably should not go into your body. Again, a treat here and there is no big deal, but the constant consumption of processed food due to buzz phrases like “fat-free” “low-carb” and “no sugar added” is not good for your health or your goals. Those types of...
